Highland Landscape by Leon Wyczółkowski looks straight down a wide valley, where blue-grey mountains stack up one behind the other until they fade into a soft, warm sky. A dark band of pine trees cuts across the middle of the painting like a wall, blocking off most of what's happening further back. In front of it, an open field takes up the whole foreground, painted in loose greens and browns with a scatter of dark, rounded shapes worked into the grass, bales or stray rocks left across the field.

Leon Wyczółkowski (1852–1936) was a Polish painter closely tied to the Young Poland movement, best known for returning to the Tatra Mountains again and again, painting the same lake or peak six times in a single day just to catch how the light kept changing.
